Definition and functions of watchmaking tools
To understand why you don’t tinker with a watch using a Swiss Army knife, you first need to grasp the very nature of these specialized instruments.
Handling and precision instruments
Tweezers and screwdrivers are essential. They are direct extensions of your fingers. Without them, it is impossible to pick up anything.
Handling micro-components is complex. Screws and springs are tiny. A bare hand cannot do anything here.
The importance of the tips is crucial. Poorly sharpened tools cause permanent scratches. Fineness ensures the movement’s aesthetic integrity.
Absolute precision required. Every gesture matters enormously.
Opening tools and work supports
Jaxa wrenches and snap-back case openers are necessary. These tools open screw-down or snap-on casebacks without slipping. This is the riskiest step for the case. Choose the wrong tool and the metal is marked for life.
The movement holder is your third hand. It stabilizes the calibre while you work. Without it, the mechanism slips and everything comes to an abrupt stop.
Watchmaker’s loupes are essential. They reveal invisible details.
How to choose your watchmaking tools?
Once the tools are identified, the real challenge lies in selecting quality to avoid buying twice.
Alloy quality and anti-magnetic properties
Choose high-quality stainless steel. Interchangeable tips are a huge advantage. You replace the worn part, not the entire tool.
Why anti-magnetic? Mechanical movements hate magnetism. A magnetized tool can make the hairspring stick and throw off the time. It’s an invisible but very real problem. Choose specific alloys to protect your calibres.
Good equipment lasts a lifetime. The initial investment quickly pays off.
Selection by level of expertise
Complete kits help beginners. They cover battery or strap changes. It’s a solid base to get started without breaking the bank.
Advanced users buy tools individually. They choose each screwdriver according to their exact needs. Quality then takes precedence over overall quantity.
Professional equipment offers surgical precision. The materials are more premium and durable. You can feel the difference from the first grip.
3 categories of equipment based on your needs
But in practical terms, what do you need for tomorrow’s tasks?
Accessories for strap maintenance
Pin pushers and spring bar tools are king. They allow you to remove links or spring bars. This is the most common maintenance task in watchmaking.
Adjusting a metal bracelet requires patience. The pins must be pushed in the correct direction. A plastic holder prevents scratching the sides. The watchmaker’s hammer should be used with a light touch.
Leather strap replacement. A fine fork is generally sufficient for the operation.
Tools for work on the movement
Cleaning and oiling require clean supplies. Oilers apply precise micro-drops. That is the secret to a watch that lasts a long time.
Air blowers are essential. They remove dust without introducing moisture. Never use your breath.
Using demagnetizers. Is your watch gaining several minutes per day? It is probably magnetized. This device fixes the problem in just a few seconds. It is a magical tool for restoring the original accuracy.
