Watches are not merely time-measuring instruments; they are also fashion accessories. Sometimes, a strap change can breathe new life into your favorite watch and alter its style.

Are you wondering how to change a watch strap? This article guides you through the essential steps to successfully perform this operation, using a few watchmaking tools and following practical advice.

Preparation: What You Need

Before you begin, take the time to gather the various items required to change your watch strap. This includes specific tools as well as the new strap you wish to install. Here is a list of what you will need:

  • A suitable watch tool (often called a “spring bar tool” or “pin tool”)
  • The new watch strap, which you can acquire from OHSelection from our wide selection of leather, NATO, or other straps.
  • A clean and well-lit work surface such as a desk or table

The watch tool is essential as it allows you to remove the spring bars (or pins) that hold the strap in place on the watch lugs. If you do not have this specific tool, we advise against using other objects, as you risk scratching your watch.

Step 1: Removing the Old Strap

Locate the Spring Bars

It is important to identify where your current strap’s attachments are located. They are usually found between the watch lugs. By looking closely, you will see the small metal bars that secure the strap to the watch case.

Please note that some watches, often newer models, feature different strap attachment systems that do not use spring bars.

Using the Watch Tool

With your watch tool, gently push on one end of the spring bar. Do this carefully to release the end caught in the watch lug without scratching the case. When you feel the pin compress, gently remove the other end from the lug. In some cases, particularly for metal watch bracelets, there are screws that protect the spring bars.

Repeat this process on the other side of the watch to completely remove the strap. Be careful not to lose the small spring bars, as they will be needed to attach the new strap.

There are also interchangeable pin systems or quick-release systems, and in this case, it is not necessary to use tools to change your strap. You simply press it to release one side of the bar.

Step 2: Installing the New Strap

Preparing the New Strap

Purchasing a replacement strap can be an exciting endeavor, especially with all the available options. Whether you opt for a metal bracelet, a leather strap, or an interchangeable model, ensure it is compatible with your watch in terms of width and style. Today, many modern straps offer a quick attachment system, also known as quick-release, which greatly simplifies their installation.

Inserting the Spring Bars

Take your spring bars that you set aside and insert them into the loops at the ends of the new strap. Ensure that the bars are properly positioned and symmetrical before proceeding to the next step.

Attaching to the Watch

To attach the new strap, begin by inserting one end of the spring bar into the hole of one of the watch lugs. Then, use the watch tool to compress the other end so that you can insert it into the opposite lug hole.

Verify that the spring bar is securely in place by gently pulling on the strap. Repeat these steps for the other part of the strap. If your strap features a deployment clasp, also ensure that it functions correctly and fits your wrist well.

Why Choose a Quick-Release System?

Many new strap models now feature the quick-release mechanism. This ingenious system allows you to change the strap without any watch tool, simply by manipulating a small integrated lever. This method not only makes changing the strap easier but also limits the risk of scratching the watch during the procedure.

Opting for a strap with the quick-release system is therefore recommended for those who wish to frequently customize their watch effortlessly.
